Coffee Story

Our Rwanda Kivubelt Lot 32 is sourced from family owned farms organized around Kivubelt Coffee-owners of several farms and a mill located in the Nyamasheke district of Rwanda. Rwanda native Furaha Umwizey established Kivubelt in 2008 after returning from Switzerland where she earned her master's degree in economics. Kivubelt currently cultivates coffee on three farms and also sources coffee from 600 neighboring small producers, who deliver cherry to the Murundo mill where the coffee is depulped, fermented, washed and dried. Kivubelt helps local producers improve quality and returns profits directly to the producers who deliver coffee to the Murundo mill. Furaha has also dedicated Kivubelt’s earnings to funding healthcare for more than 200 local residents.

Coffee Review

93 pts      Aroma: 9     Body: 8    Flavor: 9    Aftertaste: 8   With Milk: 9

Blind Assessment: Evaluated as espresso. Richly savory-leaning, deeply sweet. Tamarind, dark chocolate, sunchoke, wisteria, almond butter in aroma and small cup. Velvety-smooth mouthfeel; cocoa- and nut-toned finish. In three parts milk, sweet and savory present in particularly harmonious balance.

The Bottom Line: An impressively integrated Rwanda espresso, equally sweet and savory. Especially pleasing in milk, where chocolate and tamarind suggestions contribute to a bright, expressive cappuccino..
