Dukunde Kawa Rwanda

Coffee Story

Coffee Story

Our Dukunde Kawa Rwanda is sourced from family owned farms near the Mbilima mill located near a gorilla habitat in the Gakenke district of Rwanda. Farmer plots are so small that measurements are based on the number of trees, not the area of land. Farmers are members of the Dukunde Kawa Cooperative, which started in 2000 with just enough funds to build one wet mill. Since then, the cooperative has built three more wet mills and completed construction on their own dry mill. More than 80% of the cooperative workforce is female. Cooperative members have used earnings to improve their standards of living with investments in livestock, access to healthcare, and programs to protect the environment. The cooperative was recently awarded a SCAA 2012 Sustainability Award and is internationally recognized for their cup quality as well, consistently placing among the top in the Cup of Excellence each year.
